چکیده
THE MICROELECTRODE technique, by permitting observations of the spike trains from single sensory neurons, has broadened our understanding of sensory information processing by the central nervous system. Since technical limitations prohibit the maintenance of prolonged electrical contact with a single neuron, a relatively brief sample of the single-unit record is often the basis for characterizing the stimulus-response characteristics of a unit. I f unit discharge characteristics are invariant over time, a sample record obtained at any time would be sufficient to characterize the unit’s response. On the other hand, if unit discharge characteristics do vary over time, a sample record may give a restricted view sensory stimulation. of a unit’s response to

Modification of unit discharges in the medial geniculate nucleus by click-shock pairing.
The present experiment was concerned with some discharge properties of single neurons in the medial geniculate body of the locally anesthetized paralyzed cat. The effect of pairing clicks with paw shock upon discharge rate and pattern was of particular concern. Twelve neurons obtained from 11 cats were studied exhaustively for periods up to 4 hr. Under control conditions, rate stationarity for ...
متن کاملThe distribution of sensory evoked activity within the medial geniculate body of the unanesthetized cat.
The responsiveness of the medial geniculate body to click, flash and shock stimulation was investigated in the unanesthetized, paralyzed cat. Evoked potentials and multiple unit activity were both recorded simultaneously from the same electrode by differential filtering. The ventral division of the medial geniculate body was found to be more responsive to click stimulation than the dorsal divis...
متن کاملPrimed-burst potentiation in adult rat visual cortex in vitro
The effectiveness of θ pattern primed-bursts (PBs) on development of primed-burst (PB) potentiation was investigated in layer II/III of the adult rat visual cortex in vitro. Experiments were carried out in the visual cortical slices. Population excitatory post-synaptic potentials (pEPSPs) were evoked in layer II/III by stimulation of either white mater or layer IV. To induce long-term potenti...
متن کاملSound repetition rate in the human auditory pathway: representations in the waveshape and amplitude of fMRI activation.
Sound repetition rate plays an important role in stream segregation, temporal pattern recognition, and the perception of successive sounds as either distinct or fused. This study was aimed at elucidating the neural coding of repetition rate and its perceptual correlates. We investigated the representations of rate in the auditory pathway of human listeners using functional magnetic resonance im...
متن کاملNeural representations of temporally modulated signals in the auditory thalamus of awake primates.
In sensory systems, the thalamus has historically been considered a relay station. Neural representations of temporal modulations in the auditory system undergo considerable changes as they pass from the inferior colliculus (IC) to the auditory cortex. We sought to determine in awake primates the extent to which auditory thalamic neurons contribute to these transformations. We tested the tempor...
